Poetry
Virtually the entire canon of poetry in English, represented in a continually-expanding collection of more than 280,000 poems, including English poetry from the 8th century to the present, American poetry from 1603 to the present and African-American poetry from 1750 to the present. Twentieth-century figures range from the established to the contemporary, with poets such as Eliot, Pound, Hughes, Plath, Heaney, Sexton and Baraka.
African-American Poetry, 1760-1900
Nearly 3,000 poems written by African-American poets in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
American Poetry
Over 40,000 poetical works by more than 200 American writers from the Colonial Period to the early twentieth century.
English Poetry 2nd Edition
Containing more than 183,000 poems by over 2,700 poets, the second edition of the ground-breaking "English Poetry" Full-Text Database offers extensive coverage of poetry from Commonwealth and ex-colonial countries and reflects the poetic legacies of writers only recently brought to scholarly attention.

The Faber Poetry Library
The Faber list spans the seventy year history of this major publishing house and includes the poetry of James Joyce, Seigfried Sassoon, Sylvia Plath and Seamus Heaney. In total The Faber Library contains over 8,000 poems by 50 poets.
Prose
More than 800 prose works by writers from the British Isles and America from the period 1500 to 1903, including novelists such as Austen, Hardy, Dickens, Hawthorne and Melville.
Early American Fiction, 1789-1875
When complete, will offer more than 750 complete works of fiction by more than 130 authors.
Early English Prose Fiction, 1500-1700
The largest corpus of prose fiction works of its kind available, including over 200 complete works of Elizabethan and Restoration fiction, Jest books, popular fiction, collections of short pieces and novellas.
Eighteenth-Century Fiction
96 complete works in English prose from the period 1700-1780 by writers from the British Isles, tracing the rise of the novel as a literary genre.
Nineteenth-Century Fiction
250 complete novels from the period 1782 to 1903, including works by all the major Victorian novelists such as Dickens, Thackeray, the Brontës, Eliot and Hardy, as well as the landmarks of Gothic and other fiction from the Romantic period.
Drama
Over 4,000 works of English and American drama by authors from the late thirteenth century to the early twentieth century, incorporating dramatists such as Marlowe, Jonson, Congreve, Sheridan and Wilde. Soon to be expanded into the 20th Century.
American Drama
When complete, this collection will contain the complete texts of over 2,000 plays from the beginning of American theatre to the present day.
English Verse Drama
More than 2,200 works by over 500 named authors and 300 anonymous works.
English Prose Drama
Over 1,600 plays by more than 350 authors from the Renaissance to the end of the nineteenth century.
2. Collections of criticism and reference
As well as providing scholars around the world with the finest collection of searchable, digitised primary texts, "Literature Online" incorporates an extensive collection of criticism and reference works. These materials transform the service into a complete undergraduate study centre available on every desktop with Internet access. The resources can be searched individually or as a group.
Full-Text Literature Journals
Contemporary criticism is furnished through a dynamically-updated collection of over 70 scholarly journals. All are available cover-to-cover. Coverage starts from at least 1998 or earlier, with archives available for selected publications. The journal collection covers the entire spectrum of subject matter and methodology. Content is updated every month and the full-text of journal articles can be e-mailed directly from the service.
The Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature 1920 +
The MHRA's acclaimed bibliography of English studies contains full bibliographic details of journal articles, monographs, book reviews and doctoral dissertations published anywhere in the world from 1920 to date. Now covering over 780,000 records, ABELL acts as both a comprehensive bibliography of criticism and an access tool to the full text journals contained in Literature Online. ABELL is updated every month.
Other Critical Essays
Supplementing the coverage provided by the journals are 38 volumes of critical essays, "New Essays on the American Novel", published by Cambridge University Press.

"Literature Online's" biographies are continually updated and new biographies are commissioned from academic specialists. Subscribers to "Literature Online" who also subscribe to the "Early English Books Online" (EBBO) service are able to follow links into EEBO for over 4,500 works by literary figures, including works of history, religion, philosophy and politics.
