The African Writers Series offers access to key works from the highly acclaimed Heinemann's African Writers Series. This series provides seminal works from the canon of African literature of the twentieth century, covering such authors as Steve Biko, Ama Ata Aidoo, and Buchi Emecheta. Top novels and short stories, along with drama and poetry, are fully searchable and richly indexed. Author biographies are included.

The African Writers Series has been compiled and designed for readers and researchers at every level, offering full-text access to the most important African literary works from the past four decades. Researchers will be able to perform textual analyses of distinguished African novels and short stories together with an extensive collection of poetry, drama, and selected non-fiction. Researchers will also enjoy detailed indexing, high levels of textual accuracy and powerful search capabilities.

The accuracy of the rekeyed texts allows researchers to perform precision textual analyses of key African novels together with selected poems, plays, and nonfiction. The sophisticated search capabilities open the door to exciting new possibilities for both teaching and research:

- Authors are indexed by gender, nationality, and dates of birth/death. Texts are indexed by details of first publication (date, place, publisher, and language) and details of first publication in the AWS (date and AWS series number). These index fields are all searchable from the Search page, and are displayed in the bibliographic details for each volume. The names of translators and anthology editors, and alternate name forms of authors, are also searchable via the Author field.

- Results are displayed by genre (prose, drama, and poetry) and a search history makes it easy to combine searches. The results display is easy to navigate and hit-term highlighting is offered for the search terms.

The African Writers Series will soon be integrated as an add-on to Literature Online, offering users cross-searching with 350,000 other literary works and critical and reference material support.
