Verlagsinformation :: Publisher's information

This publication will strive to contain a list of all historical Arabic authors of books published before 1960 (authority file) and a full bibliography of all the books they wrote and published.

The records will become available in multiple formats including MARC 21 and UNIMARC, as well as ISBD for citations. The MARC records will be downloadable, and free for use to any subscribing library holding the book.

Scope

This bibliography will ultimately contain over 65,000 titles of books and 15,000 authority records. Records will be added over the years from many different sources, among them:

Catalog records from:

- Library of Congress: the online bibliographic and authority records

- Bibliothèque nationale de France

- National Library Egypt

- in the future catalogs of other participating national and research libraries of Europe, America and the Arab world.

The principles

A MARC21-XML database will be created containing the bibliographic and name authority records as found in the data sources. We will link together all of the different national formats of the authors names in Arabic as well as the transliterated formats using MARBI Model B format records, linked together by a VIAF (Virtual International Authority File) type server. A scientific committee has been established to define what special rules and usages are necessary to respond to all of the different needs of the different national and regional communities.

Editorial staff

Chief editor: Donald Goldman

Production editor: Hala Bizri

Advisory board members: Aida Nosseir, American University of Cairo; Geoffrey Roper, Aga Khan University London; Arnoud Vrolijk, University of Leiden; William J. Kopycki, University of Pennsylvania.

The project

- Phase one: A bibliography and catalog of books printed in Arabic before 1960. The records will be based on Arab characters. It will contain specifi c fi elds that will be used for creating "Authority Files" (names of authors (in Arabic), names of places, names of publishers).

- Full authority control of Romanized forms of names and places as well as the western forms of the names, in accordance with the major international standards (ISO, NACO, NAF) will be added in phase 2.

Future publications

The aim of the project is to create over a period of two years a comprehensive bibliographic source containing as much information as possible about historic Arab publishing.

- Arabic language books before 1960. Supplemented regularly.

- Arabic language books from 1961 to 1980.

- Arabic language periodicals before 1980.

- Arabic script books in other languages before 1980 (Persian, Turkish, etc...).
