PNAS is one of the world's most-cited and comprehensive multidisciplinary scientific journals, publishing more than 3,500 research papers annually. As the flagship peer-reviewed journal of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), PNAS serves as an authoritative source of high-impact, original research that spans the biological, physical, and social sciences, with global reach and open submission to researchers worldwide.

Established in 1914 following the NAS's semicentennial anniversary, PNAS has remained committed to publishing the highest-quality research and making it accessible to a broad range of audiences. In addition to research articles, PNAS features science news, Commentaries, Perspectives, Special Features, podcasts, and profiles of NAS members.

In 1995, PNAS began accepting Direct Submissions from researchers without an NAS affiliation. While maintaining strong ties with the NAS, whose members oversee our rigorous three-tier peer review process, we now receive more than 18,000 Direct Submissions each year, which accounts for more than 75% of the research we publish.

PNAS is available by subscription, with all content becoming free within six months. Authors can opt for the Immediate Open Access option to make their articles available on publication at no cost to readers. Through the Access Initiatives program, PNAS provides free and immediate access in over 120 countries.

Operating on a breakeven basis, PNAS relies on subscription and publication fees to cover ist expenses from year to year. The journal receives no federal or NAS funding, and ist financial results are integrated into NAS's overall finances, with PNAS prohibited from retaining surpluses or cash reserves. Launched in 1997, the PNAS website now attracts over 5 million page views per month, providing users with access to a rich archive of research, including PDFs dating back to 1915 and full-text articles from November 1996 onward. All content is free within six months, with immediate access available in 125 lower-income countries. Authors can also choose Immediate Open Access to make their work freely available upon publication, ensuring timely and equitable access for the global research community.
