Umfassendes Standardreferenzwerk, das die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache von ihren Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart umfassend dokumentiert. Im Vergleich zur 1. Auflage (1992–2001) zeichnet sich die Neuausgabe durch eine veränderte Struktur und einen Fokus auf moderne Forschungsmethoden aus. Wesentliche Neuerungen stellen die Einbeziehung der Korpuslinguistik und digitaler Datenquellen dar, die in den 90er-Jahren noch nicht in diesem Umfang verfügbar waren. Die Neuauflage integriert ferner Ansätze wie die Soziolinguistik, die Kognitive Linguistik und moderne evolutionäre Modelle des Sprachwandels und rückt von einer rein auf das britische Standardenglisch fokussierten Sichtweise ab, indem sie das Englische konsequent als globales Phänomen (World Englishes), behandelt und regionale Varietäten gleichberechtigt neben dem Standard untersucht. Der Online-Ausgabe liegt grundlegend überarbeitete und aktualisierte 2. Auflage der Printausgabe zugrunde, die zwischen 2025 und 2026 in 6 Bänden veröffentlicht wurde.

The origins, development and diversification of English since its earliest beginnings to the present day have fascinated generations of scholars, and continue to do so.
