Gender and women’s history form a broad field of overlapping disciplines that have shared origins and permeable boundaries with modern feminist theory, gender theory, sexuality, and cultural studies. The field is dynamic, and transnationalism and cross-cultural narratives are driving forces. Women’s history and gender history are interdisciplinary in theoretical framing. Together they draw upon the methodologies of social and economic history, as well as sociology, psychology, literary and cultural studies, and the history of ideas.

The Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Gender and Women’s History represents an opportunity to capture the historiography, themes, and new directions of the field, and, crucially, lend shape to its future. Led by Amanda Capern and an experienced team of editorial board members, this reference work will distill and summarize essential concepts in articles that can be read in thirty minutes or less.

Through the Oxford Research Encyclopedia (ORE) program, Oxford is building dynamic online encyclopedias in 20+ disciplines that will be continuously updated by the world's leading scholars, scientists, and researchers. With expert editors and peer-review, the ORE project will combine the discoverability of digital with the standards of academic publishing.
