Bloomsbury Open Collections ist ein innovatives Pilotmodell zur kollektiven Finanzierung von Open-Access-Monografien in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften. Ziel des Programms ist es, qualitativ hochwertige wissenschaftliche Monografien nachhaltig und ohne Publikationsgebühren (BPCs) für Autoren zugänglich zu machen. Das Open-Access-Modell im Subskriptionsformat (Subscribe-to-Modell) basiert auf dem Prinzip der institutionellen Kooperation: Bibliotheken beteiligen sich finanziell an thematisch gebündelten Kollektionen von jeweils 20 Titeln („Pledging“) . Bei der Auswahl der Titel für die Aufnahme in Bloomsbury Open Collections werden bevorzugt Autoren aus Ländern mit niedrigem und mittlerem Einkommen, unabhängige Autoren, Nachwuchswissenschaftler und solche, die in anderen wissenschaftlichen Publikationen unterrepräsentiert sind, ausgewählt.

Erreicht eine Kollektion das definierte Finanzierungsziel zu 50 % oder mehr, werden die darin enthaltenen Titel in einem entsprechenden Umfang unmittelbar nach Erscheinen weltweit unter einer offenen Lizenz veröffentlicht. Die teilnehmenden Bibliotheken erhalten auch dauerhaften Zugang zu allen nicht Open Access veröffentlichten Titeln. Liegt die Beteiligung an einer Kollektion unter 50 % des Finanzierungsziels, erhalten teilnehmende Bibliotheken dennoch dauerhaften Zugang zu den Titel der jeweiligen Kollektion. Unterstützende Institutionen erhalten als Bonus einen auf 12 Monate befristeten Zugang zu einem umfangreichen, kuratierten Backlist-Paket des Verlags passend zu den gewählten Kollektionen.

Die angebotenen Kollektionen decken globale Herausforderungen ab und behandeln interdisziplinär gesellschaftlich relevante Themen, darunter: African Studies & International Development, Environment & Climate Change sowie Gender & Sexuality.

Bloomsbury Open Collections is a collective-action approach to funding open access books. Through this model, we are aiming to make open access publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. Our aim is to engage a more diverse set of authors, bringing their work to a wider global audience.

What is Bloomsbury Open Collections?

• Bloomsbury Open Collections is a subscribe-to-open type open-access model which seeks to make collections of scholarly books open access immediately on publication at no cost to the author.
• Open access for Bloomsbury Open Collections titles is funded by participating libraries, which also receive private benefits for their institutions.
• When selecting books for inclusion in Bloomsbury Open Collections, we prioritise authors based in low- and middle-income countries, unaffiliated authors, early-career researchers and those who are otherwise underrepresented in scholarly publishing.

Why Should a Library Participate?

• Contribute to a progressive open-access funding model that aims to make collections of monographs available open access at no cost to the author.
• If we do not raise enough funds to publish the full collection open access, receive permanent access to any titles that do not publish open access.
• Receive one year’s access to ~150 related backlist titles for each Open Collection you participate in, as a private benefit.
• Be publicly acknowledged on our website.
  
  

2026-27 Bloomsbury Open Collections Offer

Following the success of the first three years, Bloomsbury Open Collections will continue to offer three collections of 18 titles each in:

• African Studies & International Development
• Environment & Climate Change
• Gender & Sexuality

Libraries can sign up to participate between March and November 2026, with titles in the Open Collections due to publish March 2027 - February 2028. Each Open Collection operates independently, so you can choose to participate in those that are most relevant to your institution.

How it Works

1) March 2026: Bloomsbury Open Collections launches.
2) March-November 2026: libraries commit to participating.
3) December 2026: participation period ends and funds towards the target funding amount are tallied up.

Outcome A: If more than 50% target is reached:
1) March 2027-February 2028: titles are made open access in proportion to the share of target reached; participating libraries secure permanent access to any titles in the Collection that aren’t published open access.
2) Early 2027: further Open Collections are announced.

Outcome B: If less than 50% of target is reached:
1) March 2027-February 2028: no titles are made open access; participating libraries secure permanent access to all titles in the Collection as they publish.
2) Early 2027: further Open Collections are announced.
