Jefferson war der Hauptverfasser der amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitserklärung, der erste US-Außenminister und der dritte Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten. Die Sammlung enthält nicht nur die rund 18.000 von Jefferson selbst verfassten Briefe, sondern auch die weit über 25.000 Schreiben, die er von Politikern, Gelehrten, Künstlern und Bürgern weltweit erhalten hat. Ferner enthalten sind die „Anas“, Jeffersons private Notizen aus seiner Zeit im Kabinett George Washingtons sowie seine täglichen meteorologischen Aufzeichnungen aus den Jahren 1776 bis 1826.
Die Online-Ausgabe basiert auf zwei unterschiedlichen, parallel laufenden historisch-wissenschaftlichen Print-Editionen: The Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Main Series, in der seit 1950 rund 50 Bände erschienen sind, und The Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Retirement Series, das die Zeit von Jeffersons Rückkehr ins Privatleben im März 1809 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1826 dokumentiert.

It was conceived as an experiment in the feasibility of electronic academic publishing at the dawn of the Internet age, launching its first Founding Era publication in 2004, The Dolley Madison Digital Edition. Today, Rotunda continues to legitimize and preserve digital scholarly editions by integrating them with an established university press.

Rotunda’s American History Collection is a comprehensive archive of America's documentary legacy, spanning from George Washington’s earliest surveying journals to Ronald Reagan’s Oval Office recordings. Comprising over 300,000 primary source materials, these authoritative editions, trusted by over 200 universities worldwide, bridge the gap between the meticulous scholarship of printed volumes and the ever-increasing potential of digital discovery. As the collection expands, it will look to increase its coverage of presidential correspondence, as well as introduce new, vital voices that enrich our understanding of the American experience.

The Papers of Thomas Jefferson Digital Edition
Crucial to our nation’s history as author of the Declaration of Independence and third president, Thomas Jefferson was also a major figure in the Enlightenment, representing for Europeans the embodiment of the early nineteenth-century American mind. Since 1950, his writings have been compiled in the ongoing project The Papers of Thomas Jefferson and later The Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Retirement Series which began in 2001. Rotunda’s digital edition brings together all currently published volumes from both series in one searchable online resource, in addition to the "Second Series" volumes which includes material not included with the general correspondence, such as Jefferson's Memorandum Books.
